What is Uptown Funk?
Last updated:
Uptown Funk pairs a tight funk groove with a street-side performance that feels like a whole neighborhood joining in. The AI dance meme borrows that instantly readable setup: one featured person, a crew behind them and a few bold moves timed to the beat.
The song and its music video
Uptown Funk was released in 2014 by Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars, and appeared on Ronson’s album Uptown Special. Its official video places the performers on a city street, using coordinated walking, gestures and group choreography to make the performance feel casual and communal.
The track spent 14 weeks at No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and won the 2016 Grammy for Record of the Year. Those milestones help explain why the song remains widely recognizable across generations.
Why the dance format is easy to remix
The visual recipe is simple to understand even in a short clip: a confident lead in the foreground, a line of dancers behind, coordinated retro styling and clear moves that land on the rhythm. Repetition gives each shot a strong beat, while changes in spacing and gestures keep the group performance lively.
AI dance remixes reuse that group-performance idea with a new subject in the spotlight. The result is a playful transformation, not footage of the person actually performing the original choreography. Label AI-generated edits clearly and get permission before using someone’s likeness.
The 2026 AI Uptown Funk meme
In October 2026, AI-made videos featuring technology executives in an Uptown Funk-style performance began circulating online. A post published on Bilibili on October 7 shows the format in action and labels the clip as AI-generated; treat the people and events depicted as synthetic entertainment, not as a real endorsement or appearance.
The meme’s shareable hook is the contrast between a familiar public persona and an unexpectedly polished retro dance scene. Variations can swap in friends, family or pets, provided the creator has the necessary rights and consent.
